Holiday Programs (45-90 mins.)

Seniors will celebrate the Jewish holidays with parties that include the traditional songs, foods and stories that are unique to the special day. To make the parties more meaningful, seniors’ families and volunteers are invited to join the celebration.

Rosh Hashanah

Rosh Hashanah is the first day of the Jewish calendar. In addition to the beautiful melodies associated with the holiday, Rosh Hashanah is celebrated with the blowing of a ram’s horn, and the eating of an apple and honey to signify our hope that G‑d grant us a sweet year.

Yom Kippur

In Jewish tradition, Yom Kippur is the holiest and most solemn day of the year, a day when G‑d grants forgiveness to all. It is a day that is celebrated with special songs and prayers.

Hanukkah

Hanukkah, also known as the festival of lights, is celebrated for eight days and nights. The holiday commemorates the re-dedication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem following the Jewish victory over the Syrian Greeks. The holiday is celebrated with lighting the menorah (a special 9 pronged candelabra), eating latkes (potato pancakes fried in oil), and playing the dreidel (Jewish spinning top.)

Purim

The joyous festival of Purim commemorates the salvation of the Jewish nation in ancient Persia. Eating hamantashen (triangular cookies), listening to the story of the salvation, and dressing in costume are some of the holiday customs.

Passover

The eight-day festival of Passover commemorates the liberation of the Jewish people from Egyptian slavery. The holiday is celebrated with eating matzo (flat crackers), and having a Seder (a special dinner with customs of recounting the story of the exodus.)

Shavuot

The two day holiday of Shavuot commemorates the anniversary of the day G‑d gave the Torah to the entire nation of Israel assembled at Mount Sinai. Among the traditional celebrations of the holiday are eating cheesecake and dairy foods, and reading the Ten Commandments.
