Hanukkah | Menorah car parade set for San Francisco
If you’re in San Francisco after Shabbat ends on Nov. 30, don’t be surprised if you see a menorah car parade whizzing by.
Several Chabad chapters are coming together for a menorah car processional through San Francisco. At least 10 cars — each with a big menorah strapped or magnetized to the roof — will be led by Chabad of San Francisco’s mobile cable car and Rabbi Yosef Langer on his motorcycle (if it’s not raining).
The parade will leave at 8 p.m. from Union Square after the fourth-night Hanukkah menorah lighting there. It will go to the Embarcadero, through North Beach on Broadway, to the Richmond District on California Street, and then through the Haight-Ashbury, Cole Valley and the Mission District.
Organizers say it will take anywhere from one to two hours.
As for the parade’s impact on traffic, “I don’t think it’s going to cause any blocking — but maybe some gawking,” said Langer of Chabad of San Francisco. “It’s a great thing for getting a lot of attention. This is the first one in San Francisco, but it has been done all over the world.”
Leading the parade will be the “Mitzvah Cable Car,” which will be decked out for Hanukkah.
